Mastering Street Scenes Like Vivian Maier

Saturday 26 July
West Springfield - 9am - 2 Hours
Thomas Young
A master of street photography, Vivian Maier's work unfortunately went unrecognized during her lifetime. She often shot at waist height because of her use of a Rolleiflex with a top down viewfinder. During this class we will practice taking creative selfies and decisive moments at waist height, as well as discuss Vivian Maier's work in detail in order to learn how a prominent street photographer viewed the world through her lens.

    Thomas Young
Thomas Young was born and raised in Western Mass. Always having loved art, he first picked up a camera over a decade ago as a way to gather references and study light for painting. He hasn't been able to put the camera down since.

Thomas has traveled and photographed much of New England, including most of the waterfalls in Mass, but always returns to fine art and street photography.

On safari with 2 of my friends with an amazing guide who could spot animals out at great distances. Using a 200-400 mm zoom on my Canon 80D. I was able to take several shots before the leopard turned to look at me.

Every spring large amounts Tree Swallows arrive over a two or three day period. This is the only time I have seen them perch in large groups and I have been fortunate enough to see and photograph this on a few occasions. If you observe nature enough you learn that it can be remarkably predictable and you can get some wonderful pictures.

Knelt down on the ground to get this angle. This is my go to place to walk our two dogs. Very tranquil with lots for them to sniff out. Beautiful paved and unpaved trails through the park.

I met young Miles at Ellis Square while he was doing some rather gymnastic break dancing. Luckily, for me, I was using my Nikon Z7 which allowed me to switch from raw to jpeg giving me 9 frames per second on motor drive. I was shooting aperture preferred and used f/8 the resulting shutter speed was 1/1600 of a second. 9fps sounds fast but I only had 6 nicely composed shots out of 120 exposures.

I had spent the better part of the day moving silently through the edges of the chase looking to photograph deer. It was one of those days that seemed perfect on paper: overcast skies that softened the light, barely a breath of wind, and a camera battery at full charge. But nature is nothing if not humbling. The deer remained ghost-like, unseen despite hours of quiet patience and soft steps.By late afternoon my hopes had dimmed so I began the slow walk back to the car. The path wound through

CPKC Rail Engine 9350 plus one heading east out of Winnipeg to deliver it's freight to Eastern Canada and possibly countries beyond on this beautiful summer day. Engine 9350 is a Diesel/Electric Locomotive which was built in February 2012 by General Electric and produces 4400HP which is capable to propel it to a top speed of 75mph. I love to photograph trains whenever I get a chance. To me they are iconic.
