Pioneering Colors with William Eggleston

Pioneering Colors with William Eggleston

Saturday 28 September
Main St, Northampton - 9am - 2 Hours
Thomas Young
It used to be that color photography was considered a gimmick, today it is the norm. The change in attitude towards color photography is in no small part thanks to the work of William Eggleston. Able to brilliantly capture small town American life, Eggleston had the ability to turn the mundane and simple into beautiful works of art. Through this class we will find images in the locations that would make most photographers turn their nose. Be ready to use color and shapes to find great works of art in the everyday.

Despite the rain, which nobody could control, I totally enjoyed the event. I was able to learn from Thomas and get some images that I normally would not have gotten. I'm already looking forward to attending another one.

I let a thistle grow in my backyard hoping it would attract bees, and they came and stayed. They were very agreeable and I was able to get images for over a half hour.Canon R5, rf100 macro, two Godox macro flash units and a flash diffuser mounted to the front of the lens.

When I lived in Vegas I used to go out to the Strip hotels and find interesting photo opportunities. As I was walking through this particular Asian themed hotel they had these flower vases spread incrementally through the hall. When taking the photo there wasn?t much light and rather than try to push the image I decided to use the lack of light and a painterly effect in post to create the image.

"Wildflowers don't care where they grow" (Dolly Parton) and we're all fortunate to have such beauty available to us where ever we go. This just happened to be in my back yard, but you can find such beauty on the side of the road, you just have to look.

On this dewy, fresh morning something compelled me to grab my camera and take a picture as sandhill cranes strolling gracefully through the front yard. Harriet pictured here is, as always, accompanied by Ozzie and their offspring of the season. They have been welcomed morning coffee mates for the last 12 years. The picture captures the calm presence and the dancer's restlessness of these beautiful visitors.

The Great Reno Balloon Race was this weekend. About a dozen balloon are up and aglow before dawn. This beautiful one was my favorite. Most shooting were using auto white balance, cloudy, or 5600K to keep the yellow cast from the flame. I prefer a white balance which retains the true colors of the balloons, especially for this balloon.

Location: Upper Glen Alpine Falls. I hiked to this location after sunset. The foreground is a single photo I took during the blue hour for clarity and sharpness. I couldn't wait for the Milky Way at this location due to high bear activity it was almost dark by the time I hiked back to the car. The Milky Way picture is a stack of 19 frames for noise reduction, taken a few hours later over Lake Tahoe, which is just a few miles away from the falls.Edited in Luminar Neo.
